The frustrating thing is when something looks good and actually isn’t. Sure, Wayne Shredsky isn’t the most brilliant joke ever, but I liked it. I like hockey though. Calling the songs “The Stanley Cup But Filled With Weed” b/w “Ice Bong” and “Puck Murder” and billing yourselves as “marijuana metal” is a great idea. 1. The Palm Yard debut Full Length Album entitled "CRAFT NIGHT" is almost finished mixing. OH! is being a real bitch about sounding good so we're up to mix version 2.7 or something. The other 11.5 songs are amazing. It sounds better than we ever were as a band I think... C37 tape due out Valentines Day, with a release show in Santa Cruz somewhere.

3. Last Palm Yard tidbit: We played oakland on sunday as part of a ridiculous 6 band line-up. Dylan from Man/Miracle might be sending us some home recordings to put out, and tape releases have been discussed with The Broads, Green Flash, Mountain Animal Hospital, and probably another band I can't remember right now?

5. Our web presence/personal branding still sucks. I really truly dislike computers...been reading this book titled "Our Noise" about Merge recs, the glory days of xeroxing balance sheets and harassing distros by phone for money. Highly recommended.

crafting craft night

Final mixing sessions are planned for "PALM YARD - CRAFT NIGHT" every afternoon this week, hopefully 2-3 songs a day, or as many as we can before all the knobs start to look the same.

The album was recorded on a Fostex Pro four-track, and must be routed through several mixers, pedals, black reverb boxes, amplifiers, and bathrooms before ending up on my laptop. The first attempt at mixing yielding a high pitched distortion/feedback hiss on every track because I was either using FX loops incorrectly or I patched a DS-1 back into itself and then into the board.

my radio tape loop delay pedal collaboration with verrinnt is finishing up dubbing. there are some epicly amazing pieces on there. side a is kind of like if every car in a parking lot started scanning through radio stations really fast, side b is kind of like meditating in some sort of large room or perhaps a meadow next to the beach among birds.

that's the 6th release i've made since saturday, around 100 tapes total. arts and mp3s and infos will start going up post-xmas. being furloughed from work has it's benefits i suppose.

I did something strange this weekend.

I worked on the palm yard album.

This is the box of tape that I haven't opened since the last time we recorded. I think in september or something?

Palm Yard is all about the boss corporation brand ds-1 model distortion pedal. We use it for everything. I might have actually used too much while I was bouncing stuff to computers.

We recorded on my big tascam 4-track, but some of the faders on that board are too clogged with weed resin and dust. Luckily the thing has direct outs so I just run the tape signal straight into another mixer

Running stuff through some pedals. Every track on this album has been run through an old black Alesis reverb box at some point in the process. Most everything goes through a ds-1 or a red boss distortion. Lots of equalizer pedals as well for blowing out the special frequencies.

Out the tape deck into the mixer out into the pedals and then back into the mixer and then out the mixer a different way into the recording interface plugged into a laptop onto the usb drive onto my other computer through audacity mastered to wav/tape.
I bounced everything with the instrumental mix in the left and the vox on the right. The end result will be an epic concept album in mono.

YES I do indeed have 3/4 of this album in a listenable state on my computer.
But santa (cruz) has bad news: this shitgaze aint gonna be under your tree this year.
Maybe a presidents day gift? I don't know.

growing aversion to verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus and the like, chord progressions that create no tension or release, only satisfaction of expectation. happy bubble songs.
punk isn't punk enough, it's a style that a singer/songwriter can form a group around; or folk, rock, soul.
that isn't a band. a band has a purpose. a direction.

re-hashing retro riffs and structures with new recording technology is submitting to technological determinism.

it is not possible but definite that there are songs that haven't been written yet. why most bands set out to write songs that sound like what they listen to rather than what they want to hear is beyond me.

ok so palm yard leaves santa cruz in a honda civic at 10 am on saturday, drives to echo park, plays a show at an american apparel, immediately loads up, drives to long beach, immediately loads into a living room, plays a show, drinks, gets hyphy, gets tacos, sleeps, sort of, drives to hollywood, drinks free beer, plays a show to 3 people, takes beer, then drives back to santa cruz, and gets in by 10 pm sunday.

6 instrumentals down, 3 to do this afternoon, 3 for next week. Acoustic guitars have been drenched beyond recognition with alternating waves of slap-back and cathedral echo. Drums and bass have been fattened. Cymbals are being added and equalized and echoed and mixed.

The whole thing is filling out nicely: excellent fidelity to the shitgaze, clean frequency separation among the instruments, fuzzy, but the distortion still has a certain pitch to it.

By my estimates it will be done this time next month, but you should know that I am a notorious liar.

Recording for the PLMYRDFLLLNGTH has begun; we have live instrumentals done for half the songs, the other half will be laid down over the next two weeks; then cymbals, hi-hats, long electric guitar chords, strummy acoustic stuff, plucky nylon riffs, microkorg, piano, and glockenspiel. Oh and vocals I suppose.

Shitgaze, as a neologism and a novum, is, of course, a gag. Minimal Western cultural experience is required to decode shitgaze as a joke at the expense of the musical subgenre of shoegaze, which is in itself a joke at the expense of the performance shortcomings of the bands that made up the shortlived Scene That Celebrates Itself — bands featuring guitarists who appeared to be gazing at their shoes while trying to replicate Kevin Shields sonic effects.

But these places are where the future leaks in. And, in fact, it took a science fiction writer of sorts to define the essential nature of the field and the correct response to those who maybe can’t really be bothered to step up to it and its needs: fuck you if you can’t take a joke.

For informed counsel, I turned to a colleague whose taste I abhor, and he pointed me to a new genre of intolerable noise constructed either electronically, with computers, or with electrified instruments. Its purpose, he said, is to challenge prevailing standards of normalcy by "sounding as awful as possible." Its early advocates have given it a name, derived from the rock genre "shoegaze." It is called "shitgaze." I tend to doubt that it will blossom to become the dominant music of the coming years, though music critics for publications such as The New Republic felt the same way about blues a hundred years ago. For now, I am kind of tickled by the idea of shitgaze, as much as I am maddened by the sound of it. Maybe Neil Young is onto something. Perhaps the music appropriate to this shitty time should properly sound like shit.

Friday: Palm Yard rocked the RCNV with Liz Isenberg, White Cloud, and Grand Lake. Moved 20 cassettes, made somewhere around $15, well played.

Saturday: Practiced with Whysp in San Francisco. Had a delicious vegan steak sandwich with Glenn from Skygreen Leopards. It is kind of weird hanging out with people who say "Ben" or "Phil" when referring to Six Organs or Mt. Eerie...

Sunday: Started recording the Surplus Audio Supply full length. Burned a bunch of beats and field recordings and jams onto tape...Need to do some recording mathematics to figure out how all the mixing and bounces will work.

I had only heard fragments of AristeiA on myspace before last night. They took the stage and things immediately got very heavy. Lush arpeggios and guitar licks build up over furiously strummed notes, then out of nowhere all three guitarists stomp distortion pedals and everything gets sludgey and riffy. Not wanting to be cliche or anything, but I would definitely be down to watch a city burn to the ground while AristeiA played. I wonder if there any venues that would be into that...

This was the third time I saw Cloud Archive, and they just keep getting exponentially better. The ambient passages are tightly played and well-written, with the same level of intensity as the louder distorted head banging moments. Usually the "visual" tag on myspace is a bad sign, but these guys deserve it.

How did your Korg gear fit into the making of Merriweather Post Pavilion? What do you plan to use live on the upcoming tour?
The other guys used the KAOSS Pads on the record, for sure. I hadn’t gotten the M3 until after the recording of that release was over, but I’m planning to use the m3 nearly exclusively to make my new songs. I really like how with the M3 and other devices Korg seems to be looking forward, and I'd like to be that way creatively if I can.

You can tell were the interview goes from Panda talking, to Panda choosing from a list of synergistic-on-message ad text.

P.S. Just for clarity: I would do the same thing if Boss knocked on my door. "Selling out" is not possible; the concept only exists in some sort of glorified punk dreamland.
